A Summer of Learning!

8/1/2023

This summer, Angelique had the opportunity to take two very different Acting workshops: Module 1 of the certification program at the Great Lakes Michael Chekhov Consortium and the Clown Core Program taught by the wonderful Michelle Matlock at Dell’Arte International. She chose these workshops intentionally as she wants to grow as a physical actor while preparing for her role as Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company in the fall.

She learned so much during these workshops and is so excited to put these new skills into practice this year. From the joys of making people laugh to the precise psychological gestures created by Michael Chekov to simply the importance of being comfortable doing nothing onstage but being open and vulnerable, this summer has given her many new tools to use as she continues to learn and grow as an artist. But more than that, through these programs, she met many talented and kind people in the industry and outside of it. She is so grateful for the dinners they shared, the conversations they had, and the advice and wisdom she received. She made lifelong friends in these programs, and this summer is one she will never forget.

A Part of An Original Shakespeare Musical!

April 7th to April 29th, 2023

Eighteen months ago, the talented Cary Davenport was tasked to write a musical version of As You Like It! Now, 18 months later, Angelique is thrilled to be playing Celia in the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company's 1990s Brit-pop musical version of As You Like It which features 31 Original Songs!

With songs like "Seven Ages of Man," "Blow Thou Winter Wind," and "Rosalind and Celia Flee," this Shakespearean romantic comedy will have audiences singing the score for weeks after they see this show!

This show has made Angelique step out of her comfort zone in more ways than one. She is so grateful for another opportunity to, as her friend Courtney Lucien (who plays Rosalind in the show) would say, "chase challenges" and for the brave space CSC provides her to continue to grow as an artist.

Another Great Intimacy Direction Experience with Xavier University

For the last year, Angelique has been able to work with the students of Xavier University's Theatre program as an intimacy director on three different productions. "Rabbit Hole" directed by friend and colleague Patrick Earl Phillips, and "Gruesome Playground Injuries" and "Measure for Measure" directed by student directors Tessa D'Errico and Isabelle Trapp, respectively.

Thank you, Xavier University for continuing to prioritize educational environments where all students can learn and grow without disregarding their physical and emotional well-being. It was a joy to work with these students, and Angelique hopes to work with Xavier Theatre again soon.

A Feminist Look Into William Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew

March 3rd to March 25th, 2023

Director Jemma Alix Levy took this controversial play by storm by reimagining the induction to focus on two women (Kristina and Amy), who throughout the play become more accepting of the unique relationship between Katherine and Petruchio. By keeping the induction in, the play allows the audience to not only learn from the story but also from watching the reactions of Kristina and Amy.

In this adaptation, Angelique plays Bianca, Katherine's younger bratty sister who knows how to play the game to get what she wants. This change provided a great foil to Katherine, who is not angry but doesn't follow the rules laid out by this society. When Katherine meets her match in Petruchio, they have a battle of wits "meet cute." The play then follows the pair as they fall in love and learn from each other how to survive in this world that isn't built for them. Bianca falls in love as well, but by not being herself and, in doing so, may not have the happy ending marriage between Bianca and Lucentio that Katherine and Petruchio have.

Angelique is so blessed to be a part of this daring production that has made her love Taming of the Shrew (even more than she loves its 90s adaptation "10 Things I Hate About You).

This production runs until March 25th, so get your tickets today!

Found An Acting Family This Holiday Season In Little Women

12/3/2022

November 11th to December 3rd, 2022

Picture
This holiday season, Angelique was able to play onstage again with her Cincinnati Shakespeare Company family as Beth in Little Women.

Beth is so similar to her in so many different ways. The more she discovered about Beth, the more she realized what kindred spirits they really were. And what a wonderful (and incredibly difficult) experience that really was. Those lines between character and actor blurring--especially in a version of this show that deals so heavily with grief and familial loss--were hard to shake off at the end of every night. But she believes this experience was necessary, and so important to grow as a person and as an artist.

She is forever grateful for this experience
  • For a show that gave her the opportunity to explore these feelings and this different side of herself
  • For an amazing artistic family onstage, that supported her, and laughed offstage with her, and even invited her to celebrate Thanksgiving with them as this was the first Thanksgiving she ever spent away from home.
  • For her director Jemma, who pushed her and trusted her more than she trust herself.

Thank you.

And to Beth. She has learned so much from you. The conscious of the family. But the thing that she will never forget is the line:

“You get the privilege of growing up, so use it.”

Which she was able to say every single night. Life is a privilege; it is not a guarantee. And every day that we are alive is a blessing. It is a gift. So how are you going to use it?

A Part of the Rolling-World Premiere of "it's not a trip it's a journey" by Charly Evon Simpson

August 30th to October 9th, 2022

This is a once-in-a-lifetime kind of show. It's a show that centers Black Femmes and our experiences. It is a show that Angelique will never forget. It is also a show that allowed Angelique to play a Black Woman onstage, a character originally written to be Black: something that she has never done before. Frankie is both so similar to me and so wildly different. She is complex, funny, insecure, a little mean, and contains multitudes. And it is not often that Black characters are like that, that they are allowed to be that. To be difficult and emotional, to deal with mental health, friend, and love issues. To laugh and cry and everything in between.

And then to be surrounded by these hilarious and talented Black women. Angelique has absolutely loved being in the room, working and laughing with Ariel, Jasimine, and A.J every day.

This is a show that you don’t want to miss!

Angelique took a job working as an actor for the Camden Shakespeare Festival this summer. She was playing Celia in their "Summer of Love" 1960s musical production of As You Like It. And Jeezum Crow, did she love it!

Whether it was performing outdoors right across from the Camden Harbor, meeting amazing Mainers through the local hosts she was staying with, or just taking in all of the sights and adventures Camden had to offer, Angelique enjoyed every second of her time working in Maine this summer!

Angelique is Living Out Her Wildest Dreams by Being in A Production of Pride and Prejudice, Her Favorite Book!

May 20th to June 19th, 2022

It is a truth universally acknowledge that Pride and Prejudice is Angelique's favorite book of all time. And the opportunity to play Jane Bennet and Miss Anne de Bourgh in this story was something she had never thought possible. Let alone in this 8 person, wickedly funny production at Cincinnati Shakespeare Company.

This production has been an absolute dream come true! Kate Hamill's adaptation of the story brings out the comedic and satirical nature of the book in a way that hasn't been done in any adaptation Angelique has ever seen! This story is still sweepingly romantic while also bringing to the forefront themes of gender and a woman's role in society, then and now.

Angelique is enjoying every minute of being able to bring this story to audiences young and old in this fresh and funky adaptation.

Ophelia in Cincinnati Shakespeare Company's Production of Hamlet!

3/26/2022

February 25th to March 20th, 2022

Ophelia is the most difficult role that Angelique has ever played. Which is crazy because she had the opportunity to play her one time before in college. Her first Shakespeare role in college.

Coming back to this role 4 years later, after doing 10 more Shakespeare plays and learning A LOT, she wanted to do her justice. She has grown so much in the two months that she has worked on this show. She learned so much about herself and learned from the wonderful people that she was in the room with and have the privilege to watch shine every single night.
Picture
And while she knows that what makes theatre so great is its ephemerality. That plays “are the abstract and brief chronicles of the time.” This one is going to live in her memory for a long time.
